It is difficult to narrow down a list of the top ten thoroughbred racehorses in history, as there have been so many great horses over the years. However, here are ten horses that are often considered to be among the best:

 

  1. Secretariat – Secretariat is widely regarded as one of the greatest racehorses of all time. He won the Triple Crown in 1973, setting records in all three races that still stand today. His performance in the Belmont Stakes, where he won by an incredible 31 lengths, is considered one of the greatest performances in the history of horse racing.
  2. Man o’ War – Man o’ War was a dominant racehorse in the 1920s. He won 20 of his 21 career starts and set several world records during his racing career. He was also a successful sire, producing many great horses in his later years.
  3. Citation – Citation won the Triple Crown in 1948 and was one of the most dominant horses of his era. He won 32 of his 45 career starts and was the first horse to earn more than $1 million in prize money.
  4. Zenyatta – Zenyatta was a mare who won 19 of her 20 career starts, including the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Classic, making her the first female horse to win the race. She was known for her late-closing style and her ability to come from behind to win races.
  5. Seattle Slew – Seattle Slew was the 10th horse to win the Triple Crown, doing so in 1977. He won 14 of his 17 career starts and was known for his speed and stamina.
  6. Affirmed – Affirmed won the Triple Crown in 1978, becoming the last horse to do so until American Pharoah in 2015. He had a fierce rivalry with another great horse, Alydar, and the two horses met in many memorable races.
  7. American Pharoah – American Pharoah became the first horse in 37 years to win the Triple Crown when he accomplished the feat in 2015. He went on to win the Breeders’ Cup Classic later that year, becoming the first horse to win the “Grand Slam” of American horse racing.
  8. Seabiscuit – Seabiscuit was a popular racehorse during the Great Depression. He won many big races, including a famous match race against War Admiral in 1938.
  9. Northern Dancer – Northern Dancer was a Canadian-bred horse who won the Kentucky Derby in 1964. He went on to become a successful sire, producing many great horses in the 1970s and 1980s.
  10. Phar Lap – Phar Lap was a legendary Australian racehorse who won many big races in the early 1930s. He was known for his toughness and his ability to win races at a variety of distances.
